Shadow Work
Shadow Work
I was desperate & out of ideas.
I no longer had control over alcohol.
It had control over me.
It was time to do some Shadow work...
Shadow work is the process of exploring the unconscious motivations behind your feelings or actions My mixed media painting explores the concept of 'The Shadow work' both literally and metaphorically. Through the interaction of light and dark materials, haunting long shadows and distant mystery, I aim to represent the hidden aspects of our selves that we often try to suppress.
The use of layered textures signifies the complexity of our personal shadows—emotions, memories, and experiences that shape who we are but remain in the background. The contrast in colors helps evoke the tension between acceptance and avoidance, highlighting how embracing our shadows can lead to deeper understanding and growth. By incorporating elements of texture through shellac, paper, gold leaf, acrylic and fabrics, I've created a visual dialogue that invites viewers to reflect on their own shadows, encouraging a sense of connection and introspection.
Ultimately, my work seeks to convey that acknowledging our shadows is not a sign of weakness, but rather a step towards authenticity and self-discovery. This painting has evolved over time, as I have. The Work never stops, it's your relationship with it that evolves. It's worth it.
