Shadow Line and the Falling Cloth
Shadow Line and the Falling Cloth
…“Between the idea
And the reality
Between the motion
And the act
Falls the Shadow
Excerpt from Hollow Men by T. S. Eliot
CONCEPT: With the loss of my mother Eleanor and my general disconnect from photographing people, I conceptualized ways to represent and face that loss. I staged an empty chair, her slippers, a mirror covered/uncovered with cloth, the wire cord holding the mirror and the light and shadows reflected across the room.
While these photographs were the beginning of a body of work “Portrait without a Face”, re-drawing out these images in the time beyond, extended the space for my grief and acceptance. The shadow line of that wire cord remained on the wall (later reproduced in neon light work) as the cord temporarily held the cloth as it fell to the floor.
