Girls Just Wanna...
Girls Just Wanna...
Inspired by the Cyndi Lauper song, ‘Girls just wanna have fun’ this piece is a tribute to Cyndi herself and her long running advocacy for feminism and the Queer community. She is consistently flamboyant, sparkly and present as her unique and colourful self. She knows who she is and what she wants to portray, which is not, nor ever been a sex toy, but rather, a fearless and outspoken feminist voice beginning at a time when the Equal Rights Amendment still had not been passed.
When presented with "Girls Just Want To Have Fun," it was a song about getting girls into bed. She agreed only if she could change the lyrics, and flipped the song on its head to shout girl power, and the right to have the kind of fun you want to have.
I ponder with this hybrid of old statue with a new message, what our ancestors would possibly have thought. Could our great great great grandparents ever have dreamed of a Cyndi Lauper? Did the Suffragettes will her into being? Was she a great manifestation from the pre-war woman, unable to imagine she would ever have a voice?
