A Flash Of Light Upon A Dark Day
A Flash Of Light Upon A Dark Day
My works pay homage to the brightness that these small Australian birds brought into my life during dark, uncertain times. One impulse bought budgerigar became two, then four; ultimately, I found myself custodian of a raucous aviary full of feathery drama equal to any cheesy reality TV script.
Budgerigars show great passion and tenderness towards their families, and rivalry can be vicious and at times fatal. Females are wild and distrustful of humans; the males will interact with us with laid back curiosity. They choose their mates and will grieve them; I’ve seen them die of a broken heart at the death of their partner.
During covid when time felt like it was standing still, I spent hours watching them interact- they felt clean and honest compared to the human world, which at the time was raging with so much toxicity and fear.
